PSA: GLP-1s can override your birth control. The Ozempic baby phenomenon is real.

Hey everyone, I feel like this needs to be talked about more because I haven’t seen it discussed much here. I started Ozempic back in October for weight loss and metabolic health. I’m on the pill and have been for like 6 years with zero issues. Well… I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and it was NOT planned at all.

My doctor explained that GLP-1s slow down gastric emptying so much that oral medications including birth control pills might not absorb properly. She said she’s seen several patients in the same situation over the past year. Apparently the nausea and vomiting some people experience can also affect absorption.

I’m not posting this to freak anyone out, but if you’re on any form of oral contraception AND a GLP-1, please talk to your doctor about backup methods or switching to an IUD or something non-oral. I genuinely had no idea this was even a possibility. The pharmacy didn’t mention it, and while my doc went over side effects, this particular interaction never came up.

Obviously I’m keeping the baby and everything is fine so far, but this has completely changed my life plans and I just want other people to be aware. Has anyone else experienced this or been warned about it by their provider?

  1. Oh wow, congratulations even though it wasn’t planned! My endocrinologist actually did mention this to me at my first appointment when starting Mounjaro. She said any oral medication can be affected – birth control, thyroid meds, antidepressants, etc. She recommended spacing them out from my injection day and taking them when I felt least nauseous. But honestly if you’re having significant delayed gastric emptying, spacing probably isn’t enough. I switched to the patch just to be safe because I’m definitely not ready for kids. Thank you for sharing this because you’re right, it’s not talked about enough!

  2. This is actually in the prescribing information but I agree most doctors don’t emphasize it enough. I’m a guy so doesn’t affect me the same way but I do notice my other meds seem less effective sometimes, especially if I take them close to when I’m feeling that slow digestion feeling. The whole delayed gastric emptying thing is literally how these drugs work for appetite suppression so it makes sense it would mess with absorption of everything. Definitely something that should be highlighted more in the patient education materials imo.

  3. I didn’t know this either and I’ve been on Wegovy for 5 months! Just looked it up and you’re totally right. I use an IUD so not worried for myself but this is super important info. I’ve seen a few posts on other forums about ‘Ozempic babies’ too and people joking about it but it’s a real thing. Going to share this with my sister because she just started tirzepatide and uses the pill. Really appreciate you posting about this even though it’s personal, it could help a lot of people avoid an unplanned pregnancy.
