Triple agonists and oral GLP-1 pills in the pipeline. Will next-gen drugs make Ozempic look primitive?
So I’ve been on tirzepatide for about 6 months now with pretty good results, but my endo mentioned that there’s literally a whole wave of next-generation stuff coming. Like actual oral GLP-1 pills (not rybelsus which is kinda meh from what I hear), and these triple agonist peptides that hit GLP-1, GIP, AND glucagon receptors all at once.
I’m 38M and started at 267lbs, now down to 221lbs on tirz, so it’s definitely working. But part of me is wondering if I should just wait for these newer options? The oral pill thing would be amazing honestly. I hate the injections even though I’ve gotten used to them.
Anyone else following the pipeline stuff? I saw Eli Lilly has orforglipron in phase 3 trials and there’s retatrutide which is supposedly even more effective than Mounjaro. My doctor basically said the landscape will look totally different in 2-3 years and what we’re using now might seem like the stone age lol.
Just curious if others are thinking about this or if I’m getting too caught up in future tech when what I have is already working decently.
I’ve been researching this too! From what I understand, retatrutide is showing some really impressive numbers in the trials – like people losing 20-25% of body weight. That’s significantly more than what we see with sema or tirz. But here’s the thing… these won’t be available for at least another 1-2 years minimum, maybe longer depending on FDA approval timelines. I wouldn’t put your progress on hold waiting for something that might not be accessible for a while. You’re already down 46lbs which is fantastic. You can always switch later if something better comes along, right?
The oral formulations are interesting but I read somewhere that the bioavailability is still a challenge. Rybelsus only has like 1% absorption which is why the doses are so high compared to injections. Orforglipron supposedly does better but idk if it’ll ever match injection efficiency. Personally I’m more excited about the triple agonists because adding that glucagon component might help with energy expenditure and liver fat. My concern is side effects though – more receptors activated = more potential for issues? Definitely something to discuss with your doc before jumping ship from what’s working.
tbh I think we’re in a pretty good place with current options. Yeah the new stuff sounds cool but tirz is already incredible compared to where we were 5 years ago. I’m on sema and losing steadily, no major side effects after the first month. Sometimes I think we get too caught up in the next shiny thing instead of appreciating what’s available now. That said, if an oral version comes out that actually works well I’d probably switch just for convenience sake. The weekly injection isn’t terrible but would def prefer a pill.
