DHEA: the ‘master hormone’ supplement that science can’t quite validate
So I’ve been reading about DHEA for months now and I’m honestly confused. Every supplement store markets it as this amazing “master hormone” that’ll boost energy, improve mood, help with weight management, even anti-aging benefits. But when I actually dig into the research, it’s like… really mixed? Some studies show modest benefits for certain populations, others show basically nothing.
I’m 47M and my recent labs showed my DHEA-S at 180 ug/dL which my doc said was “low-normal” but not concerning enough to treat. I’ve been on tirzepatide for 4 months (down 32lbs, feeling great overall) but still dealing with some fatigue and low motivation that doesn’t seem to be improving with the weight loss.
A friend suggested I try DHEA supplementation but honestly I can’t tell if this is legitimate or just supplement industry hype. Has anyone here actually experienced real benefits from it? My doctor basically shrugged and said “it probably won’t hurt but I wouldn’t expect miracles.” Which is… not super helpful lol.
Just curious what this community’s experience has been. Are we talking placebo territory here or is there something to it?
I tried DHEA about 2 years ago when I was going through similar stuff – low energy, brain fog, the works. I’m 51F and my levels were actually lower than yours. Took 25mg daily for about 6 months and honestly? I felt… nothing. Like literally zero difference. My followup labs showed my DHEA-S did increase but I didn’t FEEL any different which is what mattered to me. Eventually my functional medicine doc said some people just don’t convert it well or respond to it. She had me focus on sleep optimization and managing cortisol instead which actually helped way more. YMMV but I lean toward it being overhyped for most people.
Interesting that Lisa had no response because I actually did notice something, but it took a while. Started 50mg daily (maybe too high in retrospect) and around week 5-6 I definitely had better morning energy. But here’s the thing – I also broke out like a teenager. Apparently DHEA can convert to androgens and my skin did NOT appreciate it. Dropped down to 25mg every other day and that seemed better balanced. I think the “master hormone” label is marketing BS but for some people with genuinely low levels it might help? The science is definitely not as strong as they make it sound in ads though. Worth trying under supervision maybe but keep expectations realistic.
Both of you make good points. The research is really context-dependent – seems to help more in people with adrenal issues or autoimmune conditions, less so in healthy people just looking for a boost. desk_jockey_dan since you’re already on tirz and losing weight, honestly that’s probably affecting your hormone levels anyway as you lose adipose tissue. Your fatigue might be related to calorie deficit or the GLP medication itself rather than DHEA specifically. I’d give your body more time to adjust to the weight loss before adding another variable tbh. My doc always says change one thing at a time so you actually know what’s working.
