Botox for TMJ, migraines, and hyperhidrosis — the medical uses insurance might cover

So I’ve been getting Botox for TMJ for about 2 years now and it’s been life changing. I clench my jaw like crazy at night and was waking up with horrible headaches. My dentist actually recommended I see a dermatologist who specializes in therapeutic Botox and my insurance covered most of it after we submitted the right paperwork.

What I didn’t expect was that it also helped with my migraines AND reduced the sweating under my arms (I got some injected in my forehead/temple area for the migraines and mentioned the hyperhidrosis issue during one visit). Now I’m getting it done every 4-5 months and honestly it’s one of the best things I’ve done for my quality of life.

Anyone else using Botox for medical reasons rather than just cosmetic? I feel like more people should know about these applications because my quality of life improved so much. The aesthetic benefits are just a bonus at this point lol. My insurance required documentation from my dentist about the TMJ and a headache diary for the migraines but it was worth the paperwork hassle.

  1. Yes! I’ve been getting Botox for chronic migraines for 3 years now. My neurologist does the injections every 12 weeks and insurance covers it because I meet the criteria (15+ headache days per month). It takes about 31 injections across my head, neck and shoulders. The first round didn’t do much but by the second treatment I noticed a real difference. Went from 20+ migraine days a month to maybe 8-10. Total game changer. Did you have to try other preventative medications first? My insurance made me fail 3 different daily meds before they’d approve the Botox.

  2. I get it for hyperhidrosis in my underarms and hands! Been doing it for about a year. The underarm injections are totally covered by my insurance but I pay out of pocket for my hands (around $800 every 6 months). It’s expensive but I used to sweat through everything and couldn’t even hold papers at work without them getting damp. The injections hurt more than I expected especially in the palms but totally worth it imo. How many units do you get for the TMJ? My derm mentioned that as an option for my jaw tension but I wasn’t sure if it would be covered under the same authorization.

  3. This is really interesting, I had no idea insurance would cover Botox for these conditions. I’ve been dealing with tension headaches that my doc thinks might be related to jaw clenching and I’ve tried muscle relaxers and physical therapy without much improvement. Did you see results right away with the TMJ injections or did it take a few treatments? Also wondering if anyone knows how this might interact with other peptides or GLP meds since I just started tirz last month. Probably a question for my doctor but figured I’d ask here first in case anyone has experience combining treatments.
