Humanin and neuroprotection — the anti-Alzheimer’s peptide getting serious research attention
So I’ve been diving deep into the research on Humanin lately and honestly I’m pretty impressed with what I’m seeing. For those who don’t know, it’s a mitochondrial-derived peptide that’s showing some really promising neuroprotective effects in studies. The Alzheimer’s research is particularly interesting – seems like it can protect neurons from amyloid-beta toxicity and even improve mitochondrial function in brain cells.
I’m 51 and have a strong family history of cognitive decline (mom, grandmother both had dementia), so I’m trying to be proactive about brain health. Already doing the usual stuff – good sleep, exercise, omega-3s, keeping my metabolic health dialed in with semaglutide. But I’m wondering if adding Humanin could be another layer of protection.
Anyone here have experience with it? I know it’s still pretty experimental for anti-aging purposes but the safety profile looks decent from what I’ve read. My integrative medicine doc mentioned it as a possibility but wanted me to do my own research first. Curious if anyone’s tried it and noticed anything cognitive-wise, or if you’re using it for other mitochondrial support reasons.
I’ve been on Humanin (HNG variant specifically) for about 7 months now. Started it primarily for mitochondrial support after some genetic testing showed I had some SNPs affecting mitochondrial function. Honestly can’t say I’ve noticed dramatic cognitive changes, but my energy levels are definitely more stable throughout the day. The research is compelling though – I think the neuroprotection angle is legit based on the mechanisms. One thing my doc emphasized is that it works best as part of a comprehensive approach, which sounds like what you’re already doing. The family history aspect makes sense to be proactive. Have you looked into getting any baseline cognitive testing done so you’d have something to compare against if you do start it?
Interesting timing on this post. I just listened to a podcast where they discussed Humanin and MOTS-c together for longevity. The speaker mentioned that Humanin’s effects might be more preventative than restorative, which aligns with what NeuroOptimizer said about comprehensive approach. If you’ve got the family history, starting earlier rather than later probably makes sense. I’m not on it yet but considering it – I’m 47F and also thinking about brain health more seriously now. One question though – are you looking at subcutaneous injection or is there an oral form that actually works? I know bioavailability is an issue with a lot of peptides.
