I switched from Ozempic to Mounjaro and lost another 30 pounds. Is tirzepatide genuinely superior?
So I started on Ozempic last year (0.5mg then moved to 1mg) and had decent results – lost about 25 pounds over 6 months. But then I hit this awful plateau that lasted forever. My doctor suggested switching to Mounjaro and honestly I was skeptical because I thought they were basically the same thing?
But wow. I’ve been on Mounjaro (now at 7.5mg) for about 4 months and dropped another 30 pounds. The appetite suppression feels different somehow – more consistent throughout the day instead of those weird hunger spikes I’d get on Ozempic. Side effects were pretty similar during the adjustment period though.
I know tirzepatide hits both GLP-1 and GIP receptors while semaglutide is just GLP-1, but does that dual action really make THAT much difference? Or did my body just respond better to a medication switch in general? I’m curious if others have had similar experiences or if I just got lucky. My A1C also dropped more on Mounjaro fwiw (I’m T2D).
Anyone else make this switch? Did you see better results too or am I an outlier here?
The GIP receptor activation is def doing something significant imo. I’ve read that GIP helps with insulin sensitivity and might affect how your body stores fat differently than GLP-1 alone. There’s also some research suggesting the dual action leads to better weight loss outcomes in clinical trials – I think the SURMOUNT studies showed tirzepatide beating semaglutide head to head? But everyone responds differently to these meds. Your plateau on Ozempic might’ve also been your body adapting, and any switch couldve helped break through. Either way congrats on your progress, those are solid results!
I had the opposite experience actually. Mounjaro made me SO nauseous I couldn’t function, switched back to Ozempic and I’m doing fine. I think Mike’s right that tirzepatide seems more effective on paper but it really comes down to individual response. My doctor mentioned that some people just tolerate one better than the other and that matters more than which one is theoretically stronger. If you’re losing weight and feeling good then you found your med tbh. Definitely talk to your doctor before making any more changes though!
