Melanotan II safety concerns — the tanning peptide with a complicated risk profile
So I’ve been researching Melanotan II for a few weeks now and honestly the more I read, the more conflicted I feel. I’m super pale (redhead problems) and burn incredibly easily, which is what drew me to it initially. The idea of actually developing a tan without frying my skin sounds amazing.
But then I started digging into the safety data and… yikes. There’s basically zero long-term studies, it’s not FDA approved, and some of the side effects I’m reading about are pretty concerning. Nausea and flushing seem common enough, but I’ve also seen stuff about mole changes and potential impacts on existing melanomas.
On the flip side, I see tons of people using it with what seems like good results and manageable sides if you dose conservatively. I know it’s been around in the bodybuilding community for years.
I guess I’m trying to figure out if anyone here has done a proper risk-benefit analysis on this? Is the convenience worth the unknowns? My dermatologist obviously said absolutely not when I asked, but I also know docs tend to be super conservative about anything not FDA approved. Would love to hear from people who’ve actually used it or decided against it after researching.
I used MT2 for about 4 months last year and honestly had pretty good results. I’m naturally pale too (Irish ancestry) and got to a tan I never thought possible without burning first. That said, the nausea in the first week was no joke – I had to really start low with dosing like 100mcg to avoid feeling sick. The spontaneous erections were also unexpected and awkward at times lol. I stopped using it because I got paranoid about my moles. I have quite a few and one seemed to get darker, which freaked me out enough to book a derm appointment. Turned out to be nothing but it scared me off continuing. If you do try it, definitely get a full body mole check first and maybe take pictures to track any changes.
Your derm is right to be conservative imo. The mole thing SunnyD mentioned is actually a real concern – MT2 works by stimulating melanocytes which is literally what produces melanin in moles too. If you have any atypical moles or family history of melanoma I’d honestly stay far away. I decided against it after my research phase for exactly this reason. My dad had a basal cell carcinoma removed a few years ago and I just don’t think the cosmetic benefit is worth the potential risk when we don’t have long term data. There are other options – spray tans look way better now than they used to, or just embracing the pale life tbh.
Been using it on and off for 3 years, usually just in spring to get a base before summer. I think the fear-mongering is a bit overblown if you’re smart about it. Start super low dose, get your moles checked regularly anyway (everyone should be doing this regardless), and don’t use it if you have risk factors. The nausea goes away after the loading phase for most people. That said, I agree it’s def not for everyone and peptide_curious makes a valid point about family history. Just wanted to add a perspective from someone who’s used it longer term without issues. Everyone’s gotta make their own risk assessment though.
